I created the Marmara kusudama on 30 March 2021. It's actually just a few steps added to the Pera candle holder so that six pieces can become a ball when assembled.
Marmara is a region in Turkey, which Istanbul is in. And Istanbul is neighbors with the Marmara Sea on the south and in the middle.
If the keep the connection points short, the pieces stay closer. But then it somehow looks like the coronavirus. :) The master image shows the longer version. The pieces have spaces between them.
How to fold the Marmara kusudama
Step 1
Fold the windmill base.
Step 2
Fold the corners to the half way.
Unfold and squash fold them.
Fold the side corners in the middle.
Unfold and fold them inside.
Turn the model over. And crease one side of the smaller square like that.
Repeat three more times.
Fold a little diagonal on one corner.
Fold the opposite diagonal, too.
Squash and fold the outer corners as seen. The flap in between should point up.
Fold the corners of the flap inside. (They normally point outside.) You'll have double folds.
Repeat three more times. You see that the pointed corners are standing with the right angle. That means the unit is ready to be a part of the kusudama.
It's time for the assembly. You'll need six pieces in total. But I'll show you an example of two pieces. The rest is the kusudama as you know it.
Step 13
Take one pointy corner. You can leave it like that or fold it to the middle and make it a square.
Put one corner into the other corner's pocket. It doesn't matter which one will be up, unless you're trying to make a color match.
