My Forty-First Design: Kariye (Chora) Tiles

I created this design on 12 May 2021. But it took longer to discover it could be a tile. So, it's listed later.

I began with the famous hydrangea tile of Shuzo Fujimoto. I added a few step and there we go.

Kariye (Chora) is a museum in Istanbul, which is famous for its vivid frescos. I think the tiles also give the vibes of the stained glass in a church.

How to fold the Kariye tiles

Step 1

Fold 4x4 grids.

Step 2

Turn the model over and fold the corners to the middle (Blintz fold). And unfold.

Step 3

Fold the all the corners to the point as shown.

Step 4

Unfold everything and see the creases.

Step 5

Push the corners with the help of creases as shown below.

Step 6

Squash the model when you are sure you have two flaps up as shown.

Step 7

Squash the flaps and see the squares.

Step 8

Turn the model over and fold the outer flaps as petals by folding both sides in half.

Step 9

Repeat on all the petals.

Step 10

Turn the model over. This is the hydrangea tile.

Step 11

Turn the model over again and fold the corners back as far as they go.

Step 12

Unfold and squash fold the corners. Be gentle to the paper as you pull your way to the fold.

Step 13

Turn the model over and fold the sides to the middle.

Step 14

Get a sort of stick and open up the folds with it to have a tube-like look.

Step 15

Repeat on all flaps. And your tile is ready.

You can join your tiles using the outer petals.
